Dermaplaning

What is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a non-invasive, exfoliating facial that a trained professional uses a specialised blade to remove dead skin cells and fine vellis hair (peach fuzz). It is considered a physical form of exfoliation which leaves the skin soft, smooth and bright. It can also help skin care products absorb more effectively and create a smoother base for makeup application.

How Does it Work?

During the treatment, the beautician holds the skin taut, holding the blade at a 45 degree angle and uses light feathering strokes across the face and neck. The process usually takes around 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the facial protocol and has little to no downtime.

Before Your Dermaplaning Treatment

1. Stop using active skincare products 3-5 days before
Avoid products that can make skin more sensitive such as:

  • Retinol/retinoids
  • AHAs/BHAs (e.g glycolic, lactic or salicylic acid)
  • Benzoyl peroxide
  • Strong exfoliation or scrubs
2. Avoid sun exposure and tanning
Try not to sunbathe or use tanning beds for at least 5-7 days before treatment. Sunburnt skin should never be dermaplayned.
3. Avoid waxing, threading or hair removal treatments
Do not wax, thread, or use depilatory creams on the face for about a week beforehand.
4. Pause certain treatments
Avoid facials, chemical peels, laser or microdermabrasion for 1-2 weeks before unless advised otherwise by your therapist.
5. Come with clean skin
Arrive without makeup if possible, and avoid beauty oils or thick creams on the day of treatment.
6. Let your therapist know about medication
The following can affect skin healing or increase sensitivity:
