Colour Patch Test

To keep your colour experience safe and comfortable, we use Colourstart for hair colour patch testing.
What is Colourstart?
Colourstart is a professional patch test that screens for allergy to PPD, a common ingredient in permanent hair colour. It allows testing to be completed at home and recorded digitally for future appointments.
Who Needs a Patch Test?

You will need to complete a patch test if:

  • You are new to hair colour
  • You are returning to colour after a break
  • You are changing colour type or service
  • You have never used Colourstart with us before
How Does The Colourstart Process Work?
  1. Purchase your Colourstart Patch Test from us here at Buzby & Blue
  2. When it arrives, make a note of the batch number
  3. Watch the instructions and apply the patch to your arm
  4. Apply the test at least 5 days before your colour appointment
  5. Upload a photo and record your result in your Colourstart Passport
  6. Share your result with us before your appointment

If your result is clear, you’re ready for your colour service.

Future Appointments

Once you’ve completed a successful Colourstart test:

  1. Log back into your Colourstart Passport at least 7 days before your next colour appointment
  2. If nothing has changed, you won’t need to re-test

Colourstart FAQs
What happens if I am not suitable to use Colourstart?

No problem
Continue to patch test in salon free of charge every 6 months. Purchase a tube to do it yourself at home, or use our loan tube service and return at your appointment.

I have downloaded Colourstart Passport and it has advised me not to test? What should I do?
That’s ok. You can still test the same as before, however, if you have purchased a test and it is still sealed (as it is a medical) please return it to us and we will refund you.
I haven't been for a while, I have changed colour service/brand, should I retest?
You can, but you don’t have to. It’s not necessary if you have had no health changes and the questions answered are all good and give you the green light to colour.
How is my data stored?
This is fully protected under the UK’s data protection act 2018 and your data is processed in accordance with UK GDPR.
Do you see my medical information?
Colourstart passport stores your answers to the health screening questions. Us at Buzby and Blue only see your green status and any answers should you wish to share your profile with us.
Why do I not ever have to test again?
Because the Colourstart passport uses a risk-based screening system instead of constant re-exposure to chemicals to check if you are more at risk or not.
Medical classification
Unlike standard patch tests, Colourstart is licensed medicine. Its clinical data allows for a one-time test to remain valid indefinitely as long as your health status stays the same.
Help! It advised me not to colour on my screening questions as my health status has changed. What do I do?
Don’t worry, just give us a call and we can arrange an in-salon test using our original method of skin testing.
